Cobalt Sources, Functions and Deficiency
Cobalt being a component of Vitamin B-12 (4.5%) is essential for human
haemopoiesis. Only minute amount of cobalt in our daily diet is sufficient.
Functions of Cobalt in Our Body
• It is an essential element
required for the normal functioning of the pancreas. • It is also
essential for hemoglobin formation. • It may be necessary for the first
stage of hormone production i.e., capture of iodine by the gland.
Cobalt in Excess
• Excess intake of cobalt can cause
degeneration of alpha-cells of islets of Langerhans and abnormal increase in
number of circulating RBC possibly due to stimulation of erythropoietin, a
hormone which accelerates erythropoiesis.
